Women in BioTech 2021 will feature our keynote speaker Tracy L. Johnson, who is the Keith and Cecilia Terasaki Presidential Endowed Chair and Professor of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is also a professor at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In May 2020, she was named Dean of the UCLA Division of Life Sciences.

Dr. Johnson is known for her work on diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM, and was awarded the UCLA Academic Senate Award for Career Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the UCLA Life Sciences Award for Inclusive Excellence through teaching, mentorship, service, and research. She graduated from UCSD as an undergraduate.

Besides her impressive pathway, her work focuses on RNA, so she can address COVID and the Moderna & Pfizer vaccines.

“The Places Your Imagination Takes You”–The 5th Annual Women in Biotech at the Salk

SAN DIEGO – On Wednesday, November 13th, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies will host the 5th Annual Women in Biotech with the San Diego Unified STEAM Leadership Series.  Dr. Karen E. Nelson, president of the J. Craig Venter Institute will keynote, followed by an all-women panel from Illumina, the non-profit Match Your Need, and Salk Institute–300 young women from eight San Diego High schools will be welcomed as part of the 18th event in the successful 5-year STEAM Leadership series, a program of Intellectual Capital and KidsEcoClub.

Dr. Nelson, a 2017 inductee to the National Academy of Sciences and an expert in the gut microbiome, will explain her own path from Jamaica to La Jolla.

The keynote will be followed by a panel of young scientists and business leaders who will answer questions from the audience and share their experiences as women in STEAM careers.  The panelists include:
